Oyster Visa Credit CardThe March featured card has to be of course the Oyster Visa card which combines the convenience of a low rate credit card with the convenience of your oyster card. Not only is the Oystercard visa card from Barclays a combination of the two, it also means you get monthly discounts on your tube fares. Barclays really hit gold with this one as it is already in use by hundreds of thousands of London underground commuters.

The Oyster credit card is one of those innovations that you just KNOW will catch on. Combining a credit card with your oyster travel card and adding the fun of “paying by waving” it’s little wonder the Oyster credit card has already been taken up by hundreds of thousands of London commuters already.

So how does it work?

  • The Oyster credit card is simple. You make a ONE TIME application to get the Oyster Visa Card online and get approved instantly (60 seconds actually).
  • You use your credit card normally, except you can “put your oyster card” onto it.
  • You can use the VERY cool “swipe to pay” feature being rolled out in London right now. When making a normal purchase, just wave your credit card to pay, just like waving your card on the tube!

What are the pros?

  • You get 0% interest on purchases for 6 months from account opening. This is a fantastic offer and clearly designed to improve the uptake of this card.
  • You get an In-built Oyster card for the easiest way you can travel around London. You might lose your Oyster card but certainly wont lose your credit card!
  • You can go cashless with OneTouch payments a new and quick way for you to pay for purchases of £10 and under.
  • You can auto top-up from your Barclaycard OnePulse and automatically top up your Oyster pay-as-you-go with £40 or £20 whenever it drops below £5. (Late nights home anyone?)
  • 60 Second application acceptance! You can apply now and you have absolutely no wait.

What are the cons?

  • The late payment fees are a little steep at £12
  • Even if you pay the balance in full, the interest charge for the period from the previous statement to the date of full repayment will be debited the following month. The great thing about this card though is that most people “remember” to pay it back when paying for their Oyster Card.

Overall, here at EndorsedCards, we highly recommend the Oyster Card and it is a really cool and fantastically fun way to pay (waving your money away!) but keep watching this page should we process any complaints in the future. The OnePulse Oystercard has the lowest complaint rate of any “special features” card in the UK.

  1. Hi Hillary, thanks for the advice. I applied for my card on Friday and received it today! There is quite a few things you forgot to mention though, the card can be used to buy all sorts of things on the tube and around London and that RFID thingy that lets you buy stuff by waving the card is sooo cool.

I was using an american express but transfered by balance to the onepulse card. The only complaint I had was that the interest rate on teh website is not as low as it actually is ( a tent of a percent). Don’t mean to be anal about things but that gets to me.

I’ll stop back in a few weeks and let you know how I get on. Thanks again.

  2. Hi Hil,I have this card and I use it every day. Handy for paying for smokes at a tube station and one hidden benefit of the onepulse card is that I NEVER lose my oyster card because I pay so much attention to keepin my credit card safe.
There is also a cool video on DIGG about some guy who melted his down :)
