A Debit Card For Young People In The UK?
By Hillary Smith • Mar 7th, 2008 • Customer RatingWhat are the options for young people looking to get a debit card in the UK? This is a question we get a lot here at the credit watchdog. Basically, a debit card is a card that takes money directly from your bank account.
When paying in shops and online for items using your debit card, you can only spend what is in your bank account. The thing is, most people confuse debit cards with prepaid cards. Debit cards are accepted hardly anywhere online. Certainly not at any of the main online retailers like ebay or for booking flights on most airlines. What you are probably looking for is a prepaid mastercard or a prepaid visa card. Basically, these prepaid cards allow you to “top up” the card like you would your mobile phone and spend the money anywhere that credit cards are accepted. This is a very important point.
When you buy something online, the site you are buying from doesn’t actually know that it is not a credit card. To them, you enter the card number and pay. Simple as that.
Prepaid cards are a fantastic option for young people and teens. They have a 100% acceptance rate (literally anyone can get one) and they are accepted everywhere credit cards are accepted. Many young people between the ages of 14 and 24 either cannot get a credit card because they are too young or don’t want one.
Cards that operate on this model are all around the same price, about Ā£9. You can buy them online and once you have them, you don’t have to ask your parents or friends can you use their credit card every time you want to buy a pair of shoes, book a flight, book tickets or get your latest impulse buy off ebay.
We have a list of the best deal prepaid mastercards and prepaid visa cards here. Do yourself a favor, stop using your parents credit cards and get yourself either a Tuxedo Prepaid Mastercard or the best value Cashplus Prepaid Card.

Hi Shawna,
You are very welcome. Please feel free to stop back and give us a review of the card once you have had a chance to get to use it.
